Artist Biography

CANALETTO, Antonio. 1697-1768. Born in Venice, he became the pupil of his father, Bernardo Canale. He is most famous for his views of Venice, her canals, water pageants and noble buildings. In them he created an ethereal lightness, and their mellow tones seem to typify the fading glory of the great city. In 1740 he visited England, where he painted a number of views of London and the Thames. He returned to Italy in 1748 and died in Venice.
