Sir George Clauen (1852-1944), whose father was a painter of Danish extraction and whose mother was Scottish, was born in London. Following a scholarship at the South Kensington Schools he travelled on the Continent and experimented in his formative years with a variety of styles. In 1883 he attended the Académie Julien in Paris. On his return to England he moved to the countryside of Hertfordshire, and then Berkshire, to paint the agricultural labourer in his native surroundings. After many years of disagreement with the Royal Academy, Clausen was invited in 1903 to take up the Professorship of Painting at the Schools. This appointment necessitated his return to London where he settled in St. John's Wood and began painting more interior and urban subjects.
