Artist Bio

FILDES, Sir Samuel Luke. 1844-1927. Fildes was born in Liverpool and came to London in 1863 to study at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools. Prior to 1874 he was much in demand as a black-and- white illustrator for the magazines of the day and Dickens commissioned him to illustrate his last unfinished novel, Edwin Drood. In the 1870s he turned to painting social documentary subjects and was hailed as a leader of the Social Realist School. In the 1880s Fildes found yet more success as a society portrait artist, and a painting of the Princess of Wales in 1894 led to several royal commissions.
