Artist Biography

Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was an infant prodigy admitted to the Royal Academy Schools at the age of eleven. In 1848, together with Holman Hunt and Rossetti, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, rejecting academic principles for brilliant, minute accuracy based on a close study of nature. From about 1853, however, he achieved great success as an academic painter of portraits and genre scenes and in 1896 was elected President of the Royal Academy.
