Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) was born in Paris of Flemish ancestry, he began life as a racing cyclist and violinist. He was strongly influenced by van Gogh and together with Derain was a member of the Fauve group. Les Fauves (the wild beasts) was the name given to the artists Matisse, Marquet, Derain, Rouault, Vlaminck and others when they exhibited together in 1905. Their paintings were full of violent colours and distortions.
