Heywood Hardy (1842-1933) was born at Chichester and, taking up painting as a career as his father and elder brother had done, studied art in Bristol, Paris and Antwerp. He painted in both oil and watercolour and his subjects included portraits, animal studies, genre scenes and sporting subjects, and he often included figures dressed in eighteenth-century costume in his work. He settled in London in 1870, where he had been exhibiting at the major galleries since 1861, and was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1880, of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883 and an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1885. He contributed illustrations to the Christmas numbers of ‘The Illustrated London News’ (1876) and of ‘The Graphic’ (1880). Late in life he returned to his native Sussex and settled at East Preston near Littlehampton.
