Harriet Backer (1845-1932)
A Norwegian artist, Harriet Backer was born in Holmestrand, the shipping centre on the Christianiafjord, where she began taking drawing lessons at the age of six. Shortly afterwards, her family moved to Christiania, modern day Oslo, where Harriet attended a number of schools from 1861 to 1874. After realising that painting was her true metier, she travelled to Munich in 1874 to study under the painter Lambert Linder, and in 1875 under her fellow Norwegian, Eilif Peterssen. As with other Scandinavian artists, she tired of the artistic climate in Germany, and, more attracted by the tenets of French Naturalism, she moved to Paris where she lived with another Scandinavian, Kitty Kielland. In Paris she studied under Leon Bonnat, and lules Bastien-Lepage, in so doing combining her experience of the darker tonalities of Munich colourism with the looser, brighter tendencies then dominating French painting. In 1889 she returned to Norway, spending the summer months in the valleys north of Christiania, the rest of the time teaching at her school, which she managed until 1912. She had a very small output, for she worked very slowly and continued to paint richly luminous interiors until 1909.
