Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898)
Burne-Jones was born in Birmingham, and went up to Oxford intending to become a clergyman. He became a friend of William Morris, and the two were so impressed by Rossetti’s illustrations for William Allingham's ‘Elfin Mere’ that they left Oxford and became pupils of Rossetti in London. In 1857-8 all three worked together on the famous Morte d’Arthur frescoes at the Oxford Union. The following year Burne-Jones visited Italy, and in 1862 accompanied Ruskin to Milan and Venice. From about this time Rossetti’s influence on him began to wane and Burne-Jones becamean influential leader of the second Pre-Raphaelite phase, moving away from the Brotherhood’s precepts of the rigid and minute depiction of pure nature into religious and mythological fields.
