Harold Gilman (1876-1919)
Having left the Slade in 1901, Gilman spent a year in Madrid copying the work of Velasquez, although his early work suggests greater admiration for Manet’s accomplished use of black against ruddy flesh, and the intimate and smoothly painted works of the Dutch masters, Peter de Hooch and Jan Vermeer. His style underwent a change to Post-Impressionism around 1911, but it was not a sudden conversion. Gilman had enormous admiration for Van Gogh, and in his later works his thick impasto and his near obsessive rendering of detail were clearly inspired by the Dutchman’s art. Gilman was a founder member of the Camden Town Group in 1911 before becoming President of the breakaway London Group in 1913, which included former Camden members, among them Charles Ginner and Spencer Gore, as well as members of the New English avant-garde, which included Jacob Epstein and David Bomberg. The London Group was a bold, but with hindsight a very brief unification of Neo-Realists, Futurists and Vorticists, three of the most advanced, but in many ways very different wings of contemporary British Art. Harold Gilman's work is represented in many public collections. He died in the influenza epidemic of 1919.
