Artist Biography

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was born in Grenoble, the son of a landscape painter of Italian descent. He was initially taught by his father, later moving to Paris where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and the school of the French academic painter, Marc Gleyre. In Gleyre’s studio he met Whistler, Degas and Legros, who later, feature in his group portrait ‘Hommage à Delacroix’ with Baudelaire and Manet, amongst others. Fantin-Latour can be described as a realist painter, making his reputation in France with sensitive and intellectual figure groups, including several of his two sisters, whom he idolised. He exhibited these at the Paris Salon from 1861 to 1899 and also at the Royal Academy in London. Just under half of his oeuvre are still life paintings of fruit and flowers. Kahn, in his biography of Fantin-Latour published in 1927, described his skill in capturing ‘flowers that live today and die tomorrow and are not petrified in the stage of perfection, as they were by the flower painters of an earlier age.'
