Artist Biography

James Hayllar (1829-1920)
Hayllar was born in Chichester and studied with F. S. Cary (1808-1880), a genre and historical painter, and at the Royal Academy Schools. Between 1851 and 1853 he travelled in Italy and, on his return to England, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the British Institute but mainly at the Royal Society of British Artists, of which he became a member. He began his career as a portrait artist but in 1866 turned to painting child genre scenes and rural subjects, often incorporating pretty girls. In 1875 he rented Castle Priory, a large house on the Thames at Wallingford, where many of his pictures of village life were painted. Four of Hayllar’s daughters were also talented artists who painted mainly local scenes around Wallingford and everyday incidents of middle-class family life, and exhibited with their father at the Academy.
