Artist Biography

Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664) was born in Estremadura, Spain, and by 1614 was working in Seville and later in Madrid. He became court painter to King Philip IV. His paintings were mainly religious works, which show the influence of Caravaggio in their austere realism. His work was rather eclipsed in his lifetime by the more popular Murillo.
