Artist Biography

Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1855-1936)

Robert Gemmell Hutchison’s ambition to be a painter quickly led to him giving up an apprenticeship to a seal engraver, and he enrolled firstly at the Art School of the Board of Manufacturers and then at the Royal Scottish Academy. His early work was much influenced by the Hague School, in particular Josef Israels and Blommers, but the guiding light in his artistic development was undoubtedly the gifted Scottish landscapist William McTaggart (1835-1910). He began exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1878 and at the Royal Academy two years later. He was elected to several societies including the RSA of which he became an associate in 1901 and a member in 1911. Other distinctions included gold medals at the Paris Salon of 1903 and 1928. His work has a freedom of handling which gives it a charm and vitality, and though he often used children as models, he avoided the sentimentality all too easy with such subject matter.
