Artist Biography

Camille Pissarro (1831-1903) was born in the West Indies, but went to Paris in 1855. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts where he came under the influence of Corot. In 1859 he met Monet and became a member of the Impressionist group, exhibiting at their eight exhibitions. In his painting he concentrated on atmospheric effects, hut his pictures also show an interest in the structure and solidity of forms. During the 1880s he experimented with the pointillist technique of Seurat, but rejected it as too inhibiting.
