Patrick William Adam (1854-1930)
An accomplished oil painter and pastelier of landscape and interior scenes, Patrick Adam was educated at the Edinburgh Academy before going on to train under the Scottish painters Sir William McTaggart (1835-1910) and George Chalmers (1833-1878). Adam’s style, in both composition and choice of subject matter, is closest to that of George Chalmers. Highly composed pictorially, Chalmers’ genre paintings and portraits often depict solitary and motionless figures placed in areas of strong light and dark shade, the whole motif carefully positioned in dimly lit interior settings. Adam visited Italy and painted scenes of Venice and Florence, but worked mainly in England and Scotland where he lived for some years in North Berwick. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1878 until his death in December 1929.
