Born in 1878, John Hodgson Lobley’s initial successes as an artist included winning the Turner Gold Medal and a scholarship for landscape painting, while attending the Royal Academy Schools in London. He specialized in portrait, figurative and landscape painting, and was appointed an official war artist during the First World War. His paintings of ‘The Wounded Arriving at Charing Cross’ and ‘Arrival of the Wounded at Boulogne’ are both, in the Imperial War Museum. ‘The Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment holding the line at Ypres’ hangs in Huddersfield Town Hall, near where the artist was born. Lobley was made a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1927, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, he died in 1954.
