Artist Biography

Giovanni Bellini (1431/1436–1516)

In the fifteenth century no Christian household was complete without its picture of the Virgin and Child as a focal point for private devotion. These were mostly provided by artisans known as Madonnieri, who specialized exclusively in the production of such panels. Giovanni Bellini, pictor laureiitus to the Venetian Republic, revolutionised the flat, decorative style inherent in Venetian art at the turn of the century. He gave volume to his figures, establishing them in a landscape setting that became a hallmark of Venetian painting during the Renaissance. He undertook many important commissions, including the decorations (now destroyed) of the Doge’s Palace, and large, ambitious altarpieces. These include the ‘sacra conversazione’ – a composition in which the Virgin and Child is surrounded by saints. Giovanni Bellini’s panel of the Madonna and Child is unusual because of its broad landscape setting. He uses this device in small narrative paintings like ‘The Agony in the Garden’ in the National Gallery, London. The daring treatment of space in the Brera Madonna has resulted in its comparison to a sacra conversazione ‘from which all the saints have disappeared.’ Instead, two trees are introduced to balance the composition.
