Artist Biography

William Kay Blacklock (1872-1924)

William Kay Blacklock was born in Sunderland in 1872. He studied painting at the Slade School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, winning a gold medal and traveling scholarship to Italy. He also attended anatomy classes at one of the London teaching hospitals. During this period he specialized in portraiture and figurative subjects, and became headmaster of the Edinburgh Institute of Art. He resigned in 1908 due to ill health, and began to paint on a full time basis. In 1909 he married one of his Edinburgh models, and the couple moved to Chelsea, later living in Walberswick in Suffolk and Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire. They finally settled in Polperro, Cornwall, where the artist died in 1924. It was during the Cambridgeshire period, on the banks of the river Ouse, that Blacklock painted the rustic genre scenes for which he is perhaps best known.
