Artist Biography

Orlando Greenwood (1892-1989)
Orlando Greenwood became well known as a mill worker turned artist. He had worked at his uncle’s mill in Cumbria from the age of thirteen, later studying at Goldsmith’s College in London. He served with the Royal Engineers during the First World War, returning to painting and becoming known for his still lifes of porcelain figures arranged in classically inspired tableux. The reason for this, he later stated, was because he was too poor to afford models. In 1925, at an exhibition at Spinks in London, he sold twenty-eight out of thirty of his paintings, half of them within the first half hour of the show opening. The Daily Mirror described his success as ‘… a direct challenge to the ultra-modernists, since Mr. Greenwood is in the best tradition of painting.’ He later went on to paint still lifes, landscapes and architectural studies, with bright, clean colours and bold brushwork being characteristic of his paintings.
