Arthur Hacker (1858-1919)
Arthur Hacker received his training at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1878. His output was varied and typical of the popular Victorian artist – portraits and historical and romantic genre scenes. Unusual however, was his visit to Paris early in his career to study under Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat. His knowledge of late nineteenth-century French painting is reflected in pictures like ‘Young Woman in a Punt’: the lightening of the palette, looseness of the brushstrokes and asymmetrical composition are a direct response to the works of painters like Degas and Renoir as well as Bonnat himself. Hacker’s main source of employment during the latter part of his career was in the field of society portraiture and he is chiefly interesting in the way he applied these French techniques to the painting of very English young ladies.
