Pekka Halonen (1865-1933)
In the isolated province of Karelia in eastern Finland, peasant life remained virtually untainted by the industrialisation of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 1890s, with the growth of the Finnish National Romantic movement, Karelia became a place of pilgrimage for artists wishing to discover their Finnish roots. The compos Jan Sibelius and the poet Eino Leino found Karelia an important source of inspiration. Halonen’s brand of Karelianism was inspired by the paintings of the French naturalist painters, Millet and Corot. In 1891 he spent a year in Paris studying at the Académie Julian, an important school for the dissemination of the principles of plein air painting and naturalism. In 1892 Halonen visited Karelia for the first time, returning to Paris in he following year. He became influenced by Gauguin and his circle – his view of nature becoming more symbolic in response to threats of Russian imperialism on his country. In a letter to fellow artist Emil Wikstrom, following Tsar Nicholas II’s imposition of Russian legislation on Finnish government, Halonen wrote: ‘The Finnish people are as tough as Juniper; we can’t be beaten by so little ... the land and the nation will live.’ His style in later life became looser and more impressionistic. He continued to paint the peasants of Karelia, a symbol of Finnish pride and national identity.
