Artist Biography

Carl Holsøe (1863-1935)
The son of the painter Niels Pieter Christian Holsøe, Carl Holsøe began his artistic training at the Academy in Copenhagen in 1882, before enrolling at Peter Severin Krøyer’s painting school, where he met Vilhelm Hammershøi. Towards the end of the nineteenth century there was a renaissance in Scandinavian interior painting in which the work of Holsøe, Hammershøi, and another artist, Peter Ilsted constituted its most accomplished expression. Although similar in subject matter, each differed from one another on stylistic grounds. Hammershøi’s interiors, uncompromising in their purity, starkness and limited tonal values, contrast with Ilsted’s use of a greater range of colour and freer brushstrokes. Holsøe, perhaps coming stylistically midway between the two, embellished his varying tones of white with touches of local colour, often expressed in a vase of flowers, an article of shimmering silver or a glazed tureen.
