The work of Theo van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) is part of what is known as the Belgian Luminist tradition. This was a term applied to Belgian Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, largely due to the group ‘Vie et Lumiere’ which formed around the artist Emile Claus in 1904. Members of the Belgian avant-garde tended to utilize the innovations of the French without necessarily retaining the same strict adhesion to scientific method. Rysselberghe demonstrates this in his approach to the Pointillist technique of Georges Seurat. Seurat had discovered the scientific method of juxtaposing small dots of pure complementary colours which at the correct distance, and mixed only by the eye, created an appearance of shimmering light across a given subject. Seurat’s most famous painting, ‘Dimanche à la Grande Jatte', was exhibited in the annual exhibition of Les XX, an anti-academic group of independent artists in Brussels. Rysselberghe was a founder member of the group, which was formed in 1884, and assisted in the choice of foreign artists who were invited to exhibit with them. These included such controversial figures as Van Gogh and Gauguin, and Seurat. Rysselberghe had brothers specializing in architecture, engineering and invention, and was no doubt drawn by the scientific aspect of Seurat’s technique. He gradually assimilated the use of dots of colour, while retaining the lucidity of line and form that was lost in the almost mannequin-like stiffness of Seurat’s figures.
