Poul Steffensen (1866-1923) was born in Vejerslev, near Viborg, in central Denmark. He gained entry to Copenhagen’s Royal Academy in 1887, where he underwent formal art training until 1890. A painter of landscape and figurative subjects, Steffensen exhibited at the Charlottenborg – the Danish equivalent of Britain’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition – between 1892 and 1922, as well as being employed as an engraver and illustrator on a number of Scandinavian periodicals. In the late 1890s and in the early part of the twentieth century, he was commissioned to paint religious scenes for a variety of churches in the Viborg region. Steffensen died in Aarhus, on the east coast of Denmark, in 1923.
