Artist Biography

Julius Olsson (1864-1942) was born in London, of a Swedish father and an English mother, he was a self-taught artist who painted seascapes and landscapes in an impressionistic manner. The Studio Magazine (VoI.XLVIII) described him as a ‘big man with a big heart who paints big pictures with big brushes in a big studio.’ Attracted by the ruggedness of the north coast of Cornwall, he spent eighteen years in the artists’ colony of St. Ives. Adrian Stokes describes how the three beaches encircling the colony provided Olsson ‘with endless images of the evanescent rhythms, colours and motions of the sea.’ He was extremely successful, and in 1919 was elected President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
