Artist Biography

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937)
One of the four principal Scottish Colourists, the others being S. J. PepIoe, J. D. Fergusson and Leslie Hunter, there has been a tendency to view Cadell’s work in a vacuum, at the same time dismissing the peculiarly Celtic love of colour and bold form that existed before the emergence of these younger artists. In particular William McTaggart, widely regarded as ‘The Father of Scottish Impressionism’, pioneered the use of a lighter and brighter palette, and a key member of the Glasgow School, Arthur Melville, was known for his strong and fresh colours. Born in April 1883, Cadell was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, but having seen his obvious artistic promise, Melville encouraged Cadell’s, parents to send their sixteen-year-old son to Paris, to study painting at the Académie Julian. Cadell’s exposure to the powerful forces that were emerging in France at the time – mature Impressionism and the early Fauve works of Matisse and Derain – had a more profound effect on the artist than the prosaic training he received at the Académie. Unlike Peploe and Fergusson, who spent most of the pre-war years in Paris, Cadell, after leaving the Academie in 1902, remained in Edinburgh apart from a brief period in Munich, and a short stay in Venice at the end of the decade. In Scotland he had little direct contact with the progressive ideas that were emanating from abroad. As a result he chose as his subject matter articles and environments that were close at hand; bottles, fans, fashionable New Town interiors and glamorous women painted in a loose, impressionistic manner, the colours strong and fresh.
