Eleanor E. Manly (English, 1850-1931) trained at the Female School of Art, Queens Square in London. Like her sister Alice she mainly painted scenes of children in oil and watercolour. Here she has illustrated a scene from ‘Dombey and Son’, when, ‘… after explaining the lesson to Paul, he exclaims “Oh Floy! How I love you, how I love you Floy.” Eleanor Manly created incidents for the children that she painted, such as ‘A Necklace for Dolly’ or ‘Oh! Look at the Darling!’. Based in London throughout their careers, both sisters were successful and exhibited their paintings at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Society of Women Artists and the Suffolk Street Galleries.
