Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851)
Although Danish in origin, the Alken family made their home in England in the 1750’s and Henry Alken was born in London. He was the son of Samuel Alken Snr. (1750-1815), himself a painter of landscape and hunting subjects in the style of Stubbs, and started out as a miniaturist in the studio of J.T.Barker. His name is more readily associated, however, with sporting landscapes and after moving to Ipswich in 1802, he frequently went hunting in Leicestershire, capturing the excitement of the hunt in watercolours and oil. He also loved to paint shooting and coaching scenes. Alken also mastered etching and in 1849 published ‘The Art and Practice of Etching’.
