Artist Biography

Andrea del Verrocchio (1435–1488) was the foremost sculptor in Florence after the death of Donatello. He was also a leading painter and goldsmith running large, successful, workshops which employed many young artists including the young Leonardo da Vinci.
The story of ‘Tobias and the Angel’ is told in the ‘Book of Tobit’ in the Apochrypha. Set in Assyria in the 8th century BC it relates how Tobit, a devout Jew sent his son Tobias to Media to collect some money owed to him. For a travelling companion Tobias found the Archangel Raphael, mistaking him for an ordinary mortal. On the journey, when bathing in the river Tigris, Tobias was attacked by a giant fish which Raphael was able to help him overcome.
