Artist Biography

Francesco Vanni (1563-1610) was born in Siena and probably served his apprenticeship in Bologna and Rome. The artists who most influenced his work were Frederico Barocci (1526-1612), who worked in Rome for a time but mainly in his native town of Urbino, and the Carracci family of painters from Bologna, whom Vanni may have met while a pupil there. Barocci and the Carracci were opposed to the sophistication, and to the precedence which painterly technique was taking over truth to nature, in the art then fashionable in Florence and Rome. Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), the most accomplished of the family, described his fondness for Correggio and Titian in a letter to his cousin Ludovico in 1580: ‘I like this straightforwardness and this purity that is not reality and yet is lifelike and natural, not artificial or forced.’

Vanni’s ‘Rest On the Flight into Egypt’ was probably painted c.1600. Its gentle landscape and the soft and fluid lines of its figures, foliage and drapery create a mood close to the naturalism of the Carracci; this has caused some of his paintings to be incorrectly attributed to the Carracci family in the past. Vanni’s composition was also in keeping with the emergence of a ‘landscape with figures’ genre in Central Italy. Vanni had returned to Siena in 1580 and had become the most important painter in the town by the 15905, his reputation also extending as far as Florence and Rome.
