While studying law as a young man, William Henry Knight (1823-1863) was an enthusiastic amateur artist, painting mainly portraits. He exhibited two pictures at the Society of British Artists and received such acclaim that in 1845 he moved to London to further his artistic studies and soon began to earn a living from his amusing genre paintings. Between 1845 and 1864 his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and at Suffolk Street. ‘Rivals to Blondin’ was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1862. Blondin was a famous French tightrope walker and acrobat who performed amazing acts of daring, including crossing the Niagara Falls on the ‘High Wire’. He had appeared at the Crystal Palace in 1861.
