George Sheridan Knowles (1863-1931) was born in Manchester and studied at Manchester School of Art, and the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1884. He began exhibiting at the Academy and other London galleries during the following year, as well as maintaining his connections in his home town by showing at the Royal Cambrian Academy in Manchester. He was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1892 and became its Treasurer. He painted mainly genre scenes, often romantically set in the Middle Ages, or with figures dressed in eighteenth-century costume. He contributed illustrations to accompany short stories in the ‘Illustrated London News’ between 1894 and 1899.
