Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) was born in Florence, and began his career at the early age of nine when he entered the studio of Vignali; by the age of sixteen he had painted some very fine portraits and in his early twenties was enjoying enormous success with his religious paintings, characterised by their brilliant colours and rich decoration. An exponent of the more restrained style of Late Baroque, he became the leading painter in Florence during the mid 17th century. His later works were mainly small, devotional pictures, often painted in a very detailed style.
