Artist Biography

Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was first apprenticed to his father, a gold- smith from Nuremberg and then worked for the painter Wolgemut who also produced woodcut book-illustrations. In 1494 he went to Venice and again in 1505 when he met Giovanni Bellini. On his return to Nuremburg he studied mathematics, Latin/and humanist literature. His output was huge and included paintings, drawings, woodcuts, engraving and even treatises on such subjects as fortification, proportion and artistic theory. In 1512 he became Court Painter to the Emperor Maximilian and his work was influential throughout Europe.
