Artist Biography

Sigvard Hansen (1859-1938) studied at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen between 1876 and 1883, at the same time working as a trainee painter at the Aluminia china factory until 1882. After his trainee period he was supposed to join the Royal China factory, but instead applied himself exclusively to his own paintings, He won three awards from the Academy of Art, and exhibited regularly at the Charlottenburg in Copenhagen between 1882 and 1938. He travelled extensively in Europe, in 1889-90 exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London, and in 1895 in Lubeck, Germany. He was predominantly a landscape painter, like his contemporary Peder Mønsted, laying stress on the foreground of his pictures.
