Harold Harvey (1874-1941) was the only one of the Newlyn painters who was a native Cornishman. He was born in Penzance and lived in West Cornwall throughout his life being initially taught by Norman Garstin, the Irish intellectual mentor of the Newlyn School. In the 1890s he travelled to Paris to further his studies at the Académie Julian under Constant and J. P. Laurens. Back in Newlyn, he was at first a strong follower of Stanhope Forbes but he gradually moved away from the muted colours of the earlier generation and began to use a brighter palette. His charming figure studies and landscapes were acquired by many public collections. From 1898 onwards he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the provinces and abroad.
