Artist Biography

Ralph Hedley (1848-1913) attended evening classes at the Newcastle School of Art from the ages of twelve to sixteen, where he was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite style of its director, William Bell Scott. However, he didn't take up painting seriously until the woodcarving company that he had set up became sufficiently well established to provide security for his growing family. His early choice of subject matter reflects the sentiment of the new urban middle classes, children and domestic pets. When ‘Blinking in the Sun’ was exhibited in 1881, a reviewer commented that he was already “well known for his skill in painting pug dogs, terriers and cats.” Hedley’s style was to move drastically away from the influence of Bell Scott, as he he adopted the more fluid style of the Social Realists, with their emphasis on social commentary. He was extraordinarily successful, his paintings being made into successful prints, with“Going Home” featuring two miners and “Geordie had the Bairn” achieving almost a cult following. An obituary in the Newcastle Daily Chronicle described his achievement – “What Burns did for the peasantry of Scotland with his pen, Ralph Hedley with his brush and Palette has done for the Northumberland miner and labouring man.”
