Artist Biography

Thomas Cooper Gotch (1854-1931) was born at Kettering, Northamptonshire, into a distinguished and prosperous non-conformist family. He had a comprehensive art education, studying at Heatherly’s and the Slade in London, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Antwerp and under J, P. Laurens in Paris. It was during these early years that Gotch met some of the artists who were to eventually settle as he did at Newlyn, Cornwall, and together establish the Newlyn School of painters. Their style was based on that of Bastien Lepage; they painted out of doors, directly on to the canvas, and sought for their subjects incidents from traditional every-day life. During the winter of 1891, however, Gotch and his wife visited Florence and. saw the work of Quattrocento artists like Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli. This experience transformed his ideas and radically altered his style from naturalism to intensely stylised and decorative symbolism. The theme of youth tended to dominate his work, often with allegorical or spiritual connotations. He clothed his models in luxurious garments, painting them in vibrant and glowing colours and with an attention to detail akin to the Pre-Raphaelite school. Gotch exhibited at the Royal Academy, at the principal London galleries and abroad, and was also a member of many art associations and societies.
