Artist Biography

Balthasar van der Ast (1590-1656) was born in Middleburg, he was a pupil of the still life painter Ambrosius Bosschaert, and in 1619 became a member of the Painters’ Guild in Utrecht. In 1632 he moved to the guild in Delft and received citizenship of the town in the following year. He remained there until his death in 1656. Highly finished, intricately painted still lifes were very popular in seventeenth century Holland, both with the local art buyers and for export. There was thus a profusion of still life and genre artists producing work for sale on the open market, rather than for individual patrons. Van der Ast stands out for his miniaturist technique which he used on surprisingly large panels or canvases. ‘Still Life with a Basket of Fruit’ is twenty-one by thirty inches, and is a typical example of the kind of subject matter that was so popular at that time. The exotic birds, sea shells, red currants, cherries, flowers and fruit are given an almost jewel-like quality which catered for the contemporary taste in lavish ornamentation.
