Artist Biography

Frederick Goodall (1822-1904) was the son of Edward Goodall, an engraver, and he began by working in his father's studio. At the age of 14 he was awarded a silver medal by the Society of Arts, and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy just two years later. In his early years he concentrated upon rustic genre scenes, but an eight-month stay in Cairo during 1858 and 1859 dramatically changed his subject matter, and views of Egypt, scenes of Egyptian life, and biblical genre paintings dominate his later work. Frederick Goodall became a Royal Academician in 1863 and then enjoyed enormous success.
