Artist Biography

It is thought that Lorenzo Lotto (1480-1556) was born in Venice and that he may have studied with Giorgione and Titian in the studio of Giovanni Bellini. It has also been suggested that he joined the workshop of Alvise Vivarini, whose work was typical of fifteenth-century Venetian painting. Lotto was in Rome between 1508 and 1512, working in the Vatican, and although no evidence remains of his work there, his style, possibly influenced by Raphael and Perugino, became ‘lighter’ on his return to Venice. He was an eclectic artist, successfully fusing diverse ideas and techniques borrowed from his contemporaries into a style which was quite recognisably his own. Perhaps the most striking characteristics of Lotto’s pictures are their vivid colour (some of his paintings were considered to be too strident and were toned down in the following century) and their translucent quality. He was particularly skilled as a portrait painter, possessing an extraordinary ability to penetrate character. Remarkably, Lotto’s account book has survived and its entries imply that he had a ‘difficult’ character, was prolific but uneven in output, and was far from prosperous. In 1552 Lotto settled in the monastery of the Santa Casa at Loreto and became a lay brother there in 1554.
