Artist Biography

Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767-1849) was born in Geneva, the descendant of a well-to-do family of merchants of Huguenot origin. In the 1870s he apparently discovered Buffon’s ‘L’Histoire Naturelle' which inspired him to make copies of the animals in the illustrations. In 1782 he studied at the Calabri School in Geneva, in 1786 moving to Paris to study under Jacques-Louis David. He also attended a number of courses in anatomy, dissection and osteology, before being forced to leave the city on the outbreak of the French Revolution. Back in Geneva he became acquainted with George Pitt, later Lord Rivers, who was to become an important patron of Agasse in England. During the 1890s Agasse travelled to various parts of Europe, including London where he finally settled in 1800. Through Lord Rivers and others, he was commissioned to paint horses, dogs and sporting scenes. These he often repeated on demand, for example the five versions of the highly successful ‘Wellesley Grey Arabian’. He frequently painted and sketched the menagerie at the Exeter ‘Change, becoming friendly with its manager, Edward Cross, who also oversaw the Royal Menagerie. Through this connection Agasse gained a number of Royal commissions, including George IVs ‘Nubian Giraffe’ and ‘White-Tailed Gnus’. Agasse never returned to Switzerland and died in England in 1849.
