Charles Courtney Curran (1861-1942), an American painter born in Hartford, Kentucky, specialised in painting women in landscapes. His early work is more romantic and fantastical, with elegant fairy-like women placed among rose blossoms or in panoramic landscapes. A visit to the artist’s colony in Cragsmoor, a plateau in the Shawagunk mountains above the Hudson River Valley in New York State, changed his vision. Inspired by the mountains and intensely blue sky, he began to paint his women as modern pioneers, dramatically positioned against open skies. By 1910 he had built a house there and moved in. In 1899 Theodore Dreiser commented on Curran’s pictures that they ‘seek out lightness and brightness in life, noted of all men, yet seldom compounded effectively in painting.’
