Charles James Lewis RI (1830-1892) enjoyed exceptional popularity as a painter and watercolourist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1853 and was extremely prolific, painting landscapes, rustic genre and angling scenes and small domestic subjects. The reasons for his acclaim can all be found within this picture; the spontaneity of the brushwork, the bright play of light and the simple familiarity of the scene.
