Artist Biography

John Frederick Herring (1795-1865) was born in Surrey, he began work as a coach-painter in Doncaster. He then became a stage-coachman, but painted in his leisure time, being known as the 'artist-coachman'. Later he was able to paint full-time, mainly animal subjects, but particularly horses and racecourse scenes. He became very popular and received commissions from King George IV and Queen Victoria.
