John Constable (1776-1837) was born in Suffolk, the son of a miller. After much parental opposition he succeeded in reaching London and was admitted as a student to the Royal Academy. For many years his wonderful studies of nature met with little appreciation in a world more familiar with stylised and artificial landscapes. His native countryside exercised the greatest influence upon him and he loved to roam about the fields with his sketch-book. He composed his finished canvases straight from these sketches and never included in them the fanciful decorations, such as pillars and ruins, which were so popular at the time. Later his works won high praise both in England and France and his paintings were much admired by the Impressionists.
