Henriette Ronner-Knip (1821-1909) was born in Amsterdam, the daughter and pupil of Joseph Augustus Knip. In 1858 she married Teico Ronner and went to live in Brussels. She became well-known as an animal painter and was commissioned by the Queen of the Belgians to paint portraits of her dogs in 1876. This led to commissions from other members of the Royal Family and the Belgian nobility. In 1877 the King of the Belgians conferred on her the Cross of Leopold, an honour rarely bestowed on a woman. At about this time Henriette Ronner transferred her attentions to the painting of cats, which was to occupy her for the rest of her life. She exhibited in the Hague and Amsterdam from 1838 to 1895, and received many gold and silver medals for her work, and the honorary membership of many Art Societies. Several Dutch and Belgian museums have examples of her work. Henriette Ronner died in Brussels in 1909.
