GRIMSHAW, John Atkinson. 1836-93. Born in Leeds, the son of a policeman. He taught himself to paint and was considerably influenced early in his career by the Pre-Raphaelites. He was interested in photography and used camera-obscura to project outlines onto his canvas. He also mixed sand with his paint to get desired textural effects. He specialized in moonlight scenes, often painted near docks, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1886.
