Artist Biography

Frederick William Hulme (1816-1884) was born in Swinton, Yorkshire, in October 1816. Hulme was taught by his mother, a painter on porcelain. His first recorded exhibition was at the Birmingham Academy in 1841, before he moved to London in 1844 where he worked as an illustrator and engraver. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1852 until his death in November 1884. Hulme worked principally as a landscape painter, portraying idyllic scenes peppered with rustic figures and farm animals. His subjects were taken from the rural landscapes of Wales and Surrey, while in his colouring and in his style, his work was similar to that of both William Shayer and Thomas Creswick. The colours used by all three artists are clear and fresh, with the scenes set around an idealised triangular motif of a tree, a figure and a group of animals, both romantic in feeling and clean in execution.
