Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) was taken to Rome at the age of thirteen where, specialising in pastel portraits, he was considered to be a child prodigy, and five years later he was made court painter, like his father, at Dresden. From 1755 he was much influenced by Johann Winckelmann whose studies of classical art formed the basis of the NeoClassical movement. Mengs visited the antiquities at Herculaneum and began to work in a style which embodied many of the ideas of Neo-Classicism and rejected those of Baroque and Rococo art. His treatise on Beauty in Painting was translated into many languages between 1762 and 1792. In 1761 he became court painter to Charles III of Spain and executed murals for the royal palaces, but his best pictures were portraits, often of gentlemen and princelings in Rome on the Grand Tour.
